I landed here with the same problem. One of my users kept showing that they are offline even though they are connected to the network and their share is "available". I upped the quota and it's now online and syncing correctly again after a PC reboot.

Simon Wand. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate bit on my laptop and have set up offline files to make a small number of files available when I'm not connected to the network. The problem occurs when I'm connected to my network and I work on any files which are available offline. Otherwise, we can select automatic caching.

For instance, we can set automatic synchronization whenever user reconnects. This way we ensure that the user has latest files downloaded from the server. We can also encrypt Offline Files the offline files cache. That way our sensitive data is protected while we are away from the company, for example.

We can also choose to preserve NTFS permissions. This can be done if the client computer is formatted with NTFS. There are two actions that we must take to enable Offline Files. Offline File access must be enabled on the shared folder, and Offline Files must be enabled on each workstation that needs to use offline access for the shared folder. In our example, we will go to the E drive, open properties for the Manuals folder, go to the Sharing tab, and click the Caching button. That means that only files specified by users are made available offline.

We can change this to automatic caching, which means that the file is cached when user opens it. We also need to enable Offline Files on the client computer. We need to enable Offline Files so that they are available on this machine. Click Apply and OK. We have enabled Offline Files, but that does not mean that any files are copied to our computer.

Offline files can also identify synchronization conflicts in scenarios like some one else modifying the same files before you sync your changes. The logic behind Offline Files is very simple. When we mark a folder for offline cache, Offline Files copies all the files from the network share and stores them on the local disk. When the machine is disconnected from the network, Offline Files detects it and forwards all file access requests to the local copy.

I marked a folder servershare for offline cache. I am connected to the network. Which one is used when I try to access serversharefile1.

Server copy? Offline Files comes into picture only when the share is offline i. So when you are online, all the file access requests go to the server as usual. All file operations that can be done while in online mode can also be done in offline mode, the only exception being deleting a folder. The modifications will be applied on the local copies. When the machine is reconnected to the network, Offline Files synchronizes the changes with the server copies.

This is the limit for temporarily cached files. Note that this in no way limits the space occupied by the cached files.
